The difference is that " Race " mode for the Golf R has been specifically designed for that model unlike the other Golfs, for high speed track driving (damping is increased & engine response & shift points for DSG) configured to be even sportier.

All other details aside, one key difference between the 2019 and 2020 GTIs will be the shift away from the fairly generous 6 year/72K warranty to something much more limited for the new model year. A dealer salesman I trust pretty well mentioned this to me a few days ago, actually.
Posted July 21, 2018. The DSG is different (6 speed in Mk7, 7 speed DQ381 'box in the Mk7.5). Sport mode in the 6 speed is not very practical unless you are driving quite hard (constantly revving very high). Other options can make a difference eg DCC vs non DCC suspension. Quote.

IS20s are pretty tough (the later revisions). I'd trust an IS20 run on a nuclear tune before an IS38. I've personally run 31psi and made 440wtq on an IS20 and it took it like a champ.
